The Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro took place in 2016 and were the twenty-eighth modern Summer Olympic Games, the third to be held in the Southern Hemisphere and the first to be held on the continent of South America.

The decision as to who would host these Games was made in 2009. There were four final candidates - Rio De Janeiro, Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago. Only the first round was close and once Chicago was eliminated Rio led the voting comfortably and maintained it in the final vote over Madrid. Doha, despite having a good rating, were forbidden from competing due to insisting that the Games take place in October - outside the IOC's time frame for the Games.
