The first Olympic Games in Tokyo took place in 1964 and were the fifteenth modern Summer Olympic Games and the first to be held in Asia as well as the fourth to be held outside of Europe.

After failing in their first attempt to bid for the Games, Tokyo were successful in their second attempt in 1959. There were fewer candidates this time - Detroit, Vienna and Brussels. Tokyo were awarded the Games upon receiving more the fifty percent of the votes without a count-back being required.
